Kevin Cromartie: A Life Shaped by Art and Travel
Kevin Cromartie's relationship with art began before most people can read. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, he was drawing with exceptional precision by the time he was in elementary school — his teacher recognized the talent early and encouraged him to pursue private lessons. By high school at Hastings-on-the-Hudson in New York, he was voted Most Artistic in his graduating class of 1970.
He went on to study at the Parsons School of Design in New York City — one of the most prestigious design institutions in the world, whose alumni include Edward Hopper, Roy Lichtenstein, and Norman Rockwell — majoring in illustration and painting.
Kevin's art has always been shaped by the world he's moved through. His father was a senior executive and labor attorney for Trans World Airlines, which gave Kevin the rare opportunity as a young person to travel extensively — encountering diverse cultures, landscapes, and wildlife that would later become central to his work. That sense of the wide world, the dramatic and the wild, runs through his paintings to this day.
His career has been genuinely wide-ranging. Wildlife compositions brought him into retail partnerships with The Nature Company and Banana Republic. In the mid-1980s, Determined Productions licensed his work for department stores including Macy's and J.C. Penney. His hand-painted apparel was carried at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus, and Harrods of London. His paintings have been exhibited at Dyansen Gallery in Carmel and Coast Gallery in Pebble Beach–Big Sur, and his clients have included Jane Goodall, Doris Day, Betty White, Clint Eastwood, and Steve Jobs.
He has operated galleries in Pasadena, Carmel, and Monterey's historic Cannery Row. He has taught art, web design, and publishing. He has illustrated children's books. He has done, in short, what artists do — followed the work wherever it leads.
Sophia Cromartie: Cosmos, Color, and Her Own Vision
Sophia Cromartie grew up around her father's art. She absorbed his discipline, his eye for detail, his commitment to the craft. And then she went her own direction entirely.
Where Kevin's work is often rooted in the observable world — landscapes, wildlife, portraiture — Sophia's painting moves toward the cosmic and the interior. Her canvases are large, her color palettes bold, her subject matter the kind of thing that resists easy description: the spiritual architecture of the universe, in her own words. Planets andstars rendered not just as physical objects but as metaphors for consciousness and connection. A lunar serenity that pulls you inward rather than outward.
She is also a ballerina, a musician, a singer, and a psychology major — someone who came to visual art as one language among many for understanding the human experience. That breadth shows in her work. Her paintings feel emotionally intelligent in a way that's hard to manufacture.
What They Make Together
The name Cromartie & Cromartie is accurate in the most literal sense: this is a collaboration between two people who share blood, a name, and a deep seriousness about making art. But their work is distinct. Kevin's landscapes and portraits carry decades of craft and a career that has touched every corner of the art world. Sophia's cosmic expressionism is younger, bolder, and pointed toward questions that don't have easy answers.
Together, the collection spans wildlife and wilderness, coastlines and mountain ranges, portraiture and abstraction, the seen and the imagined. There's something here for nearly every kind of art lover — and behind all of it, a genuinely human story about a father and daughter who found that making art was something they both needed to do.
